Our Story

Punch Line Comedy Club opened in San Francisco in 1978 and has since been the launching pad for countless comedy legends. The San Francisco stage was the first for many renowned comedians, including Robin Williams, Dana Carvey, Ellen DeGeneres, and Drew Carey. The club also hosted early performances by Zach Galifianakis, Amy Schumer, Hannibal Buress, Ali Wong, Bill Burr, Gabriel Iglesias, Aziz Ansari, Marc Maron, John Mulaney, and Margaret Cho before they achieved widespread fame. Dave Chappelle, who once performed a six-hour set at Punch Line, has called it “the best comedy club in the U.S.A.”

Punch Line expanded to Sacramento in 1991, further cementing its reputation with stars like DL Hughley, Chelsea Handler, Russell Peters, and Jo Koy. In 2016, Punch Line headed to the East Coast with a premier venue in Philadelphia, gaining the respect of local legends and aiding the rise of new talent. The newest addition, Punch Line Houston, opened in 2024 and aims to become a cornerstone of the Texan comedy scene by helping local comedians make their mark and establishing the southern city as a must-stop on national tours.

Punch Line Philly promises a unique comedy experience for both audiences and performers. This 300-seat venue boasts intimate seating, a lobby bar with an outdoor patio, and a full-service food and beverage program.

Comedy is the sport at Punch Line, where the pros may not lift weights heavier than 16 ounces, but they train like athletes. They hone their timing and cadence, practicing tirelessly to ensure their jokes land with expert precision. No matter the city, the goal is always the same at Punch Line Comedy Club: we'll leave you seeing stars!
